In 1979, Maryland passed direct access legislation, which allows you to go directly to a licensed physical therapist without a physician referral. Maryland Direct Access laws indicate that there are no restrictions or limitations whatsoever for treatment absent a referral. This means that you, as a patient, can be evaluated and treated by a licensed Physical Therapist without having to first see your physician for a referral.
There are many benefits to Direct Access, including:
This will give you much quicker access to the treatment you need and deserve.
While each patient’s case is different, clinical research shows that Direct Access should save you money.
Physical therapy visits last 30-60 minutes so your condition is thoroughly evaluated.
Seeing a physical therapist first, in many cases, will result in fewer overall treatment sessions, better results, and a faster recovery.
While Maryland state law allows unrestricted direct access, some insurers may have additional requirements. For example, the Physical Therapist needs to consult with the patient's physician regarding the plan of care if therapy lasts longer than 30 days for Medicare patients. However, your referral for Physical Therapy can be accepted at any Physical Therapy facility that you choose, depending on your insurance coverage.
We value the relationship we have with our patients, and their physicians. We will continue to foster this relationship by notifying a patient's physician of our evaluation and findings and providing updates on the care plan as needed. We continue to strive to provide you and your family with the best quality healthcare possible.
